CARBON & CLIMATE

The Carbon Cycle

Returning Carbon to the soil.

Urth’s role in climate change.

It has become abundantly clear: whether our changing climate is man-made or not, the solution to addressing it must involve removing carbon from the atmosphere and returning it to the soil. And while many are looking to new technologies, large scale reforestation or other hopeful and ambitious efforts, there is simply no greater untapped resource for carbon capture than our existing farmlands.

The climate solution beneath our feet.

The soils used to grow our global food supply represent the greatest opportunity for taking carbon from the air and storing it under ground. But in order for this process to work, soil needs to be healthy, structured and rich in living organisms that can use and store this carbon. This is the type of soil that grows better, nutrient rich crops. This is the type of soil that Urth’s products and approach support.

More nutrients in crops means more Carbon in the ground.

Unlike sterile, compacted soils that result from use of chemical inputs, healthy soils are abundant in organic matter and teeming with microbes that require carbon for reproduction. In addition to supporting the growth of stronger, healthier plants and nutrient dense crops, the resulting improved plant and root mass also captures and stores more carbon than a less robust plant. Efficient photosynthesis improves the plant's ability to feed organisms in the rhizosphere. This symbiotic relationship is beneficial to all organisms involved. Bacteria are fed by the plants root exudates and the bacterial metabolites, in return, feed the plant. Similarly, Fungi are fed by the plants exudates and the fungi, among many other processes, produce glomalin, a glycoprotein which glues soil particles together in aggregates. These aggregates are important for soil structure and optimal water infiltration. It’s a self-reinforcing, natural cycle.

Support for a critical mission.

Urth is committed to efforts supporting the health of our climate, our foods, and the success of our customers. All Urth products are compatible with carbon capture best practices and we look forward to continuing work with government or commercial organizations that incentivize carbon goals or more sustainable, regenerative farming practices.
